Mirror Boxes | W Budapest Hotel

The 5 mirror boxes for the spa section of the five-star W Budapest hotel located in the Drechsler Palace, designed by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos, were made by Rákosy Glass. The steel structure and mirror cover of the four body treatment rooms and a sauna located in the basement of the building were designed in such a way that they fit perfectly into the space of the basement, while also meeting the requirements of the function (among the acid-etched mirrors placed in the interior, several boards had holes and cut-outs, for example connectors, thermostat, due to the placement of bluetooth, volume control, switches and clothes hangers). A total of approximately 400 square meters of mirrors were installed in this special space.

The height of the mirror boxes is uniformly 2.8 m. The imposing curves of the cellar ceiling were perfectly imitated with shaped, triangular and hexagonal glass on top. The roof windows of the created rooms are uniformly made of 2 x 10 mm thick tempered glued safety glass.

Transporting fragile glass panes and mirrors requires special tools and experience to minimize the risk of the task. Especially when large glass panes need to be moved on narrow stairs and narrow spaces, where laving requires precise work and serious logistics. In the context of a construction or renovation, there are also many other factors that make it difficult to work with glass panels, for example, many contractors are working at the same time, the construction environment is dusty and dark, there is little space available for installation, etc.
